I pulled this 2006 shot out to work on in the Kim Klassen Cafe http://www.kimklassencafe.com Skinny Mini Ecourse I'm taking. I'm trying to learn how to use Photoshop (CS5, in particular) to create and manipulate layers, and one of my goals was to learn how to do that and use a texture.
So I did it! She gives great step by step instructions (her 'recipes').
What I did here was Background layer, copy it and use soft light blending mode, then another layer with multiply blending mode, then used one of her textures with a multiply blending mode on the next layer. Then copied that texture layer again and used soft light blending mode. Then I made a channel mixer adjustment layer to pull out some of the green., using a mask to bring back a little bit in the sky to the left. Then I made a Hue/Sat adjustment layer and took the sat down. (all of that is apparent on the color version of this image). Then I made a contrast adjustment layer to bring up the contrast and used a soft light blending on it. Then on this one, the final step was a black and white adjustment layer, but then I used a mask with the opacity bumped way down to bring back just a touch of color on the roof, car, sky, trees and grass.

Original version is here, looking fairly flat and washed out: http://www.kdstewart.net/PeoplePetsFood-Homes/Homesteads/7599817_Zqs8n#1161085377_L8B5J
This was really fun to do and pretty easy once you know the steps! Yay!
