September 10, 2011 Spiral Shadows After reading about Topaz Labs' new B&W Effects on 2 Guys Photo blog (here: http://2guysphoto.wordpress.com/2011/09/02/daily-photo-phix-dune/), I decided to try it. I like it! I took this shot on my deck a few weeks ago after noticing the play and lines of the shadows on the wood of the deck. I processed it using Topaz B&W Effects Chocolate Dynamics filter (probably mostly liked the name before I saw what it did!). I tweaked some areas and increased the detail a little. Come Set A Spell

Dipping into the archives to work through backlogs of images there. This is from a trip a few years ago to the North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching in Cullowhee, North Carolina. It was a wonderful trip in a beautiful area. I think this is one of the images I took with a 35mm camera that they provided. I liked the textures and warm tones.

I can't believe the last time I posted was the 11th. Wow. Have had lots on my plate and I guess it shows in lack of posting to the dailies and being able to see all your wonderful images and comment on them!

I think we have a record here in this image - I am still operating on the theory that I'm not necessarily going to take a fresh photo to post to the dailies, but using some from my archives and therefore finally getting around to editing and posting photos that I haven't had time to previously. So today's image is from January 2005. Yep. 6 years later, she finally gets around to editing it. :)

I used Topaz Adjust's Spicify filter on this and then slightly adjusted the color on the midtones and highlights.

Fig, Canvasback Texture

My friend, Randi, brought over a selection of 3 different types of figs for us to sample on Friday. We didn't eat one of them - and here it is. Not sure which type this is, but it was so beautiful in the sunlight this morning, that I had to shoot it. Upon analyzing the images of it afterwards, the stark background with the shadow was a bit too stark, even for my simplistic and stark-leaning taste. There was something just not quite right about it, so I added the canvasback texture from Kim Klassen (www.kimklassencafe.com) and I like what it adds. If you look in larger sizes, it is easier to see what I'm talking about.

Pies Ready

Flaming Onions

I'm getting a jump on tomorrow's daily since I won't be able to post maybe until next Sunday! This is a shot from my son's high school graduation dinner this past June (a chorus of angels sings 'Halleluja' when I say that). The onions are a bit blown out, but I liked the tones of the flames. And it tasted darn good too.

Jamestown Settlement Fence

This is also an image from the archives (from a 2007 trip to Jamestown Settlement, Virginia). Yes, it really has taken me this long to get around to fiddling with some of these shots - 4 years! Yikes! And this was even taken with my old camera.

Not sure I like the actual comp on this (which is what makes an image) but it was good to have the chance to play with it. Not sure I even like what I did with it as far as pp, but again, it was good to have the chance to experiment. I used Kim Klassen's warm sun texture layer (kimklassencafe.com) and turned down the sat and other stuff.

Birdhouse Gourds

Wow - thanks so much for all your comments and congrats on my Red, White and Blue cupcakes! You guys are the best. :)

Today's image is one from my NCCAT (NC Center for Advancement of Teaching www.nccat.org) trip several years ago. Again, this is a shot that has been sitting in my archives for years, waiting to be processed, so I'm very glad that it is out today, even though it is not exactly a super image! At our NCCAT seminar, we were given 35 mm cameras to shoot with for part of the time, and this is from that series.

Taken in/near Cullowhee, NC, these are birdhouse gourds hanging on poles as birdhouses (to attract purple martins that eat insects), but look closely at one of the gourds on the left . . . could be a 'stick'y situation for the birds!
