Birdhouse

Dipping into the archives again to try to clear them up a bit. I think I took this at the NC State Fair last fall at the Dept. of Agriculture end of fair layout. They had some great displays there of tobacco production, cooking over fires in cast iron skillets, apple cider making, lots of garden and produce displays and info.

Sorry I wasn't able to view and comment on your images last week, all, but very busy few weeks at work!

Wheelbarrow

This is another from the archives, that I am just now (years later) having a chance to get to! I took this on my trip to Cullowhee, NC a few years ago on an NCCAT (North Carolina Center for the Advancement of Teaching www.nccat.org) workshop. They gave us 35mms to work with for the time we were there, so this was taken with their 35 mm.

Today I played with that 35mm image, just fooling around with software. I liked the general idea of the original image, but the wheelbarrow of flowers just kind of blended in with the background of stone and wood, since they all have a lot of pattern and texture. So I just used it to play with today. I applied Topaz Adjust's Spicify filter, which plays up texture and color, and then burned the wood and stone in the background to darken it a bit so that the wheelbarrow stood out more. Not really happy with it, but hey, it was for play and practice! :)

Thanks for your comments this week on kids and dogs and Mandolin!

Oh! And check out my blog if you have a chance. The story winner, based on daily photog Janet McQueen's photo has been chosen! Great short story and great image, Janet! http://www.karastewartaip.blogspot.com/

Mandolin

Another dig into the archives for today's daily/weekly. I took this at an NCCAT (North Carolina Center for Advancement of Teaching http://www.nccat.org/s/1099/start.aspx ) workshop in Cullowhee, NC a few years ago. This was taken with a 35mm.

Thanks for all your kind comments on my kids' snapshots - you know how it is! :)

UPDATE: Not sure what keeps happening to this image. It keeps disappearing from my smug daily site! I don't mean disappearing from some sort of ranking on the dailies - I mean this is the THIRD TIME I have uploaded it to my dailies gallery on smug. It keeps disappearing. Very odd and frustrating.

ANOTHER UPDATE: We have a winner on my blog for the Write That Photo Contest! This is the one using our own daily photog, Janet McQueen's photo. Check it out at: http://karastewartaip.blogspot.com/2011/10/we-have-winner.html

Yet another quick snapshot of the kids and dogs from last week when they were over for dinner. One more of these tomorrow and then on to other topics!

Yet another snapshot of when the kids were home for dinner last week. More of the same to come, so bear with me!
Kara Stewart > October 3, 2011

Thanks for your input into the shot of Luke yesterday! The favorite seems to be the selective color one, with the bw (infrared) the next favorite. I did go ahead and submit the bw one to the current dgrin challenge - Monotone, since I happened to take it within the required time frame and it happened to be monotone!

This shot was taken last week when both kids (and their dogs) were home for dinner. Just a snapshot, but I like it the best of the couple I'm going to be uploading to the dailies over the next few days because this is the shot where they were both laughing at me for something I said!

Luke SC 6768

So here is my experimentation on yesterday's shot of Luke. I used Topaz BW Effects Infrared, then used their Erase tool to bring back the color on his tongue (very fun tool!) since I just loved that big pink tongue hanging down. I also applied a quick spot of Dodge to the eye in shadow. Then back in CS5, I removed his UNC Tarheels collar so that there would be less distraction in the total image (same reasoning in turning the image bw - less distraction from the green grass).

It makes for a very different looking image than yesterday's. A little kitschy, maybe. Not sure.

Here is yesterday's color one: http://www.kdstewart.net/Whats-New/2011/15273048_BD3WrW#1506672555_ZHWPb5k

Here is the other variation of today's with no SC on the tongue: http://www.kdstewart.net/Whats-New/2011/15273048_BD3WrW#1508081676_tRXXtsd

What do you think? Which do you like best?

Luke BW 6768

Here is yesterday's portrait of Luke in just bw. I used Topaz BW Effects Infrared filter on this and applied a quick spot of Dodge to the eye in shadow, then back in CS5, removed his UNC Tarheels collar so that the image would have less distraction and be less specific!

I might like this one best of the three portraits. Not sure.

Luke 6768

Thanks for all the bday wishes! What a nice thing to read all those wishes!

This image was actually taken last Tuesday, when my daughter brought Luke over. Big, bad Luke, or "Wukie", as we call him! He's not really bad. And not all that big. Around 80 lbs, maybe a bit less? He is supposedly a black labrador retriever and chow mix, and you can see some black on his tongue at the back, and when he is excited his tail almost makes a circle over his back, so maybe that is the chow part.

He is a really, really great dog. Excellent watchdog, but then loves people as long as we do. Smart young dog but not as much of a velcro dog as Samson is (which is good). He's independent and confident. Luke is also not a huge fan of water - so maybe that part and the independent part is more chow than lab.

Although I know my daughter will like this image just as it is (she goes to UNC CH and is a Tarheel) I'm thinking about messing with this photo to make the Tar Heels less noticeable (hey, you never know, some people may not be Tarheel fans!) on the collar. Maybe black and white? But I love that pink tongue. BW with SC on the tongue maybe . . . *scuttling off to experiment*....

having some trouble posting to fb with this one - but this one is today's daily!

UPDATE: Here is today's image in a bw version with selective color on the tongue: http://www.kdstewart.net/Whats-New/2011/15273048_BD3WrW#1508081050_NxfFVtL

Whoopie Pies

These are whoopie pies that my daughter made last night for my birthday! If you don't know what a whoopie pie is or have never had one, you are missing out! Chocolate cake top and bottom with marshmallow filling. Yum! I had the recipe sitting around all summer on my kitchen counter and asked my daughter to make them for my birthday, and she kindly obliged me. :)
