Kara Stewart  > Art Plus > Native Roots
"Is not the prairie different than the river? The mountains different than the plains? ... Are there not different realities to move among, to dance with? ... Learning to hunt within the night is as powerful within its teaching as learning to hunt within the day. When we hunt the invisible we must dance within that world. We must look closely at our invisible surroundings. There are worlds within worlds, and each one is unique. Each one is a wondrous adventure. These worlds are around us all the time!" -- from Little Wolf, The Black Lodge, Song of Heyoehkah, by Hyemeyohts Storm

Kara Stewart > Golden Leaf

This was taken in early morning, mid-July in a tobacco field in Person County, North Carolina. Tobacco is a traditional subsistence crop in North Carolina.
Kara Stewart > Golden Fields

Taken in northern Person County, North Carolina, near the traditional Sappony tribal homelands
(www.sappony.org). Pine trees, tobacco and soybean crops. I gave this piece an impressionistic painting effect to enhance the color.

Kara Stewart > Redbud Blowout

This piece began as this: http://karastewart.smugmug.com/photos/507726396_XC8Di-M-3.jpg

I left the the bark of the redbud tree and deep color of the blossoms evident in this piece. The redbud is the established harbinger of spring here in North Carolina. We look forward to the bright pink buds against the charcoal gray of the bark every year!
Kara Stewart > Dew on Redbud

The eastern redbud is native to the southeastern United States. In this part of North Carolina, when we see the deep pink blossoms along the otherwise colorless and bare banks of trees, we know spring is on the way!
Kara Stewart > Corn and Pumpkins
